Director of Music Ministry (Full-Time)

Qualifications:

 

n      Primary commitment to promoting, supporting and enhancing assembly participation in parish worship;

n      Familiarity with pertinent liturgical rites and documents of the Roman Catholic Church;

n      Good to excellent keyboard and vocal skills;

n      Good to excellent choir direction skills;

n      Good pastoral skills pertinent to interaction with parish music ministers of all ages and competencies;

n      An understanding of one’s role in the parish as that of ministry;

n      Ability and willingness to collaborate with other members of the parish pastoral staff;

n      Appreciation of and comfort with a variety of liturgical music styles.

 

 

Areas of Responsibility:

 

  1. To identify and nurture the musical gifts of the parish community:

 

n      Assembly:  To develop a prayerful, singing assembly through celebration, preparation and evaluation, education and personal ministry;

n      Instrumentalists:  To cultivate a range of instrumental musicians and work with them to maximize and coordinate their gifts;

n      Cantors and Psalmists:  To identify, train and nurture members of the parish who are capable of serving as cantors and psalmists;

n      Choirs:  To work with existing choirs in the parish (and develop new ones where possible), grow their memberships and quality, instill in them a sense of music as ministry.

 

  1. To cultivate a community of music ministers with a common vision and commitment to mutual cooperation and support;

 

  1. To maintain and enhance, with appropriate parish and staff consultation, a parish repertoire of liturgical music within approved budget parameters;

 

  1. To maintain and keep in good working order instruments, sound system and other equipment associated with the ministry of music;

 

  1. To plan all music associated with worship, religious education, social ministry, evangelization and any other aspect of the parish mission as needed;

 

  1. To serve as accompanist for weekend liturgies, holy days of obligation, civic holidays, sacramental celebrations, liturgy of the hours, major liturgical celebrations and some weekday liturgies;

 

  1. To coordinate and schedule instrumentalists, cantors, psalmists and choirs;

 

  1. To rehearse with choirs, instrumentalists and vocalists as needed;

 

  1. To serve as a resource to staff for parish programs as needed;

 

  1. To accompany and assist in planning school liturgies;

 

  1.  To serve as music minister for all parish funerals:

 

n      To work with families of the deceased to plan music for the funeral which is in keeping with appropriate liturgical norms;

n      To serve as accompanist and when necessary as cantor for the funeral liturgy;

n      To collaborate with guest music ministers when requested to do so by the family of the deceased;

 

  1. To serve as music minister for all parish weddings:

 

n      To work with couples to plan music for the wedding which is in keeping with appropriate liturgical norms;

n      To serve as accompanist and when necessary as cantor for the wedding liturgy;

n      To collaborate with guest music ministers when requested to do so by the couple;

 

  1. To attend parish staff meetings, liturgical planning meetings and other parish committees and boards as necessary and appropriate;

 

  1. To participate in the process of determining a parish budget for music ministry,  working in consultation with the parish bookkeeper, Finance Council and pastor;

 

  1. To provide opportunities for development and continuing education of self and staff, including these opportunities as line items in the preparation of the budget;

 

  1. To arrange for substitutes when on vacation and in cases of excused absences;

 

Accountability and Evaluation:

 

n      The Director of Music collaborates with the parish staff and is accountable directly to the pastor.

n      The Director of Music will be evaluated by self and pastor on an annual basis, with such evaluation serving as the basis for future contracts.
